The New Development of the Lead-acid Battery Industry under China's Carbon Strategy

The new situation facing the industry In 2020 China has put forward the goal of "achieving carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060” in 2020.  Coal accounted for 13.2% of the proven reserves of China’s main energy sources-oil, natural gas, and coal, and its consumption accounted for 51.7%.

SHANGHAI, Oct 22 (SMM)—The new situation facing the industry In 2020 China has put forward the goal of "achieving carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060” in 2020.  Coal accounted for 13.2% of the proven reserves of China’s main energy sources-oil, natural gas, and coal, and its consumption accounted for 51.7%.

How to achieve this goal?

1. Cut coal consumption

The proportion of coal consumption shall fall below 56%, and decrease to 51% by 2025. Non-fossil energy will account for about 25% of total energy consumption. Carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP shall be 60%-65% lower than in 2005, and the emissions will peak around 2030.

2. Development of clean and efficient energy

3. Large-scale development of energy storage market

The latest energy storage policy "Guiding Opinions on Accelerating the Development of New Energy Storage" proposes to realize the transformation of new energy storage from the initial stage of commercialization to large-scale development by 2025, and achieve full market-oriented development by 2030.

About energy storage:  On June 22, 2021, NEA issued the latest energy storage policy "New Energy Storage Project Management Regulations (Interim) (Draft for Comment)", pointing out that new energy storage projects are mainly in the form of export electricity, except for pumped storage.

According to statistics, China's lithium-ion battery output increased year by year from 2015 to 2020. The domestic output of lithium-ion batteries has reached 18.845 billion in 2020, an increase of 19.87% YoY.

Amid the rapid rise in the prices of lithium resources, rising prices of upstream raw materials, sodium-ion batteries are ready to go. As a supplement to lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries may be used in base stations, low-speed vehicles, two-wheeled vehicles, household, and commercial energy storage as well as passenger cars in the future.

The road to future development

1. Speed up the pace of product and technological innovation and upgrading;

The research and development of high-power, long-life products and technology shall be promoted. The R&D of high-energy electrolyte technology shall be advanced. Electric vehicles and intelligent power plants match with the shortcomings of lithium batteries;

Aim at the field of wind, solar, and hydropower energy storage.

2. Optimise energy system and pollution prevention and treatment system

Further reduce energy consumption and source strength (energy-saving lead powder machine, continuous casting, punching and coating production lines, sealed pressure curing chamber, vacuum battery formation, pulse fast charger, etc.);

Improve the purification efficiency (four-level, new-type chemicals), and optimize the collection system, circulation system, and discharge outlet. 3. Promote products to be included in the high-end value chain;

Optimize the industry smile curve;

Compared with low-value-added production and manufacturing, R&D, design, and marketing brands have higher added value, which is also the direction that companies need to continuously strive to optimize;

Integrate decentralized manufacturing resources to achieve collaboration;

Accelerate the establishment of cloud online service systems and terminal smart operating systems;

Speed up the advancement of the cloud online service system, with the mobile terminal as the core, and access to a unified customer service platform through multiple channels such as APP, WeChat official account, Weibo, and web pages;

Accelerate the construction of the upstream and downstream coordination system of the industrial chain, and gradually develop from pure trade relations to collaboration and cooperative partnership.
